Finland is one of the leading countries in information technology and both the European Union and the Finnish government are engaged in building a sustainable information society. This is also the main strategy of the town of Kouvola where Sustainable Information Society - Values and Everyday Life - an international conference on futures research, environmental sustainability and the information society - took place in September 2001.

Teledemocracy - new forms of communication between decision-makers and citizens
Are the citizens willing and able to participate in the emerging information society? Dr. Christa Slaton introduces a method of deliberative public opinion polling and discusses the problems of direct democracy.

Predicting the future
Jerome C. Glenn - the Director of The Millennium Project, gives us a brief overview of the future. He thinks that the Internet will evolve into a global brain that will later become conscious-technology: humans become cyborgs and built environments become intelligent. Fasten your seatbelts!

Haastateltavana on Kouvolan kaupunginjohtaja Aimo Ahti.
